Genesis Cinema
The Context and our plans
Proposed bar/event space
Proposed concessions area
Unfortunately, recent years have been hard for cinemas across the country, and we have been no exception to this. At the same time, we need to update our offering to better suit the habits and expectations of modern cinema goers, while maintaining our unique Genesis experience. This has led us to consider redeveloping the site to provide a new cinema fit for the future along with around 300 purpose-built student accommodation beds on the floors above.
The site is ideally located for student accommodation with excellent transport links and amenities. The student accommodation element of the scheme will be operated by an established student accommodation provider. Meanwhile once reopened, the new Genesis cinema will continue to be owned and operated by the same team led by Tyrone Walker-Hebborn and will retain its distinctive look and feel. We will also reprovide the invaluable event space which brings the community together.
We have worked with award winning architects on an initial set of plans for how we think the redevelopment could look. However, before we submit any planning application to Tower Hamlets council we want to hear what you think of the proposals. We will consider all feedback and where possible incorporate your comments into the final plans.
Tyrone has run the cinema with great pride and passion since he saved it from over a decade of abandonment and dilapidation in 1998. He has lived in this area his whole life and has run Genesis as a family business for the last 26 years. Despite some tough times he has loved running this local institution, pouring his personality and love of cinema into every part of it. He wants to keep Genesis alive and would hate to see its future put into doubt by financial instability. These plans will secure the future of Genesis and enable Tyrone to keep the identity and unique character of Genesis thriving for the enjoyment of the next generation.
